Nutrition and Soul: How Does Our Diet Affect Mental Health?

Nagy Vilma Nagy Vilma
Since the discovery of the gut-brain axis, we know that diet directly affects our mood and mental well-being. Our dietitian summarizes the key information.

In the past decade, revolutionary discoveries have been made about the connection between nutrition and mental health. Research on the gut-brain axis has proven that the state of our gut flora directly affects our brain function, mood and thinking.

The Gut-Brain Axis

The intestinal system contains more than 100 million nerve cells – it's not called the "second brain" for nothing. The state of gut flora influences serotonin production (90% of the "happiness hormone" is produced in the gut!), immune system function and inflammatory processes.

What foods support mental health?

  • Omega-3 fatty acids: fatty fish, flaxseed oil, walnuts – reduce inflammation and support brain function
  • Probiotic foods: yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi – nourish beneficial gut bacteria
  • Whole grains: ensure stable blood sugar levels, preventing mood swings
  • Green leafy vegetables: sources of folate, magnesium and B vitamins
  • Berries: rich in antioxidants, protecting brain cells

What to avoid?

Processed foods, excessive sugar consumption and additives negatively affect gut flora and thus mental health. Excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption can also increase anxiety.
