Conscious breathing is one of the most effective and easily accessible methods for managing stress. Here are 5 techniques you can practice anywhere, anytime.

Breathing is the only autonomic bodily function that we can also control consciously. This unique property makes breathing techniques one of the most effective stress relief tools.

1. Box Breathing

Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds, then hold for 4 seconds. Repeat 4-5 times. This technique is particularly effective for anxiety and panic.

2. 4-7-8 Breathing

Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, then slowly exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds. This method helps with falling asleep and deep relaxation.

3. Belly Breathing (Diaphragmatic Breathing)

Place your hand on your belly and breathe so your belly rises on inhalation and falls on exhalation. The chest should barely move. Practice daily for 5-10 minutes.

4. Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana)

This ancient yoga technique balances the nervous system. Close the right nostril, breathe in through the left, then close the left and breathe out through the right. Reverse and repeat 5-10 times.

5. Extended Exhale

Simply extend your exhale to twice your inhale. If you breathe in for 3 seconds, breathe out for 6 seconds. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system and creates a state of calm.

Try these techniques and notice which works best for you!
